The Malkwowa shopping mall located in Skorzewo, Poland has a new exquisite addition. It’s and it’s a café with a design that makes it stand out from all the other typical mall cafés. That’s because this one was designed to look and feel like a cozy home.
At the center of the café is a large rectangular table with a solid wooden top and a bio fireplace at the center. The combination between these two elements is really interesting. It was a way for the designers to combine function and ambiance, to keep the décor practical but also to make it inviting and comfortable.
The fireplace is not the only homely element included in the design. The floor tiles was carefully arranged to form an area rug display for the central table.
Another unique element is the roof-like suspended ceiling. It was designed to give the whole space a warm and comfortable look and to make everyone feel at home here. It even has carved out skylights and built-in lighting.
The lift of elements that make this wonderful café so beautiful and welcoming goes on and also includes features such as a large counter like the ones found in traditional kitchens. Here is where homemade pastries are displayed (the owner’s specialty).
The café alternates various seating arrangements. Apart from the large table at the center, there are also several smaller individual tables placed along the walls. They’re complemented by long benches on one side and chic chairs with wooden legs and black seats on the other.
The choice of materials and colors is meant to maintain a warm and pleasant ambiance. Wood was used for the tables and wall panels and it’s organic color is complemented by black and white accents.
The lighting is variate. Modern, traditional and retro fixtures and mixed and matched, creating beautiful combinations and contrasts and contributing to an overall harmonious look.
We asked the designers a few questions about the whole concept behind this project and the way in which all the details were transposed into a cohesive and harmonious design and these are the answers we received:
Was there a second element (besides the desire to create a homely ambiance) you has in mind when designing the table and fireplace combo?
The idea in general was to bring people together and maybe encourage them to interact. The owner already says there is one regular customer who appears almost every morning with a newspaper and orders coffee, cake and lighting up the fireplace.
Are these cozy details enough to compensate for the fact that the café has transparent glass walls which take away its privacy and expose those inside to everyone passing by?
Yes. Transparent wall gives an interesting combination of a homely atmosphere and a street cafe. All in all coffee is just a pretext to watch other people.
The whole décor is obviously comfortable, warm and inviting. But what about the chromatic palette? Have you considered adding a touch of vibrant color to the space to give it a fresh and energized look?
Chromatic palette gives the owner opportunity to play around with seasonal decoration. She has already started a collaboration with neighbouring florist.Touches of color can constantly change while the basis remains discreet and universal.
By including elements specific to residential spaces in their design, the team of designers from mode:lina managed to turn this 96 square meter space inside a shopping mall into a home away from home, a comfortable and inviting café where guests are encouraged to interact with each other and to become one big family.
